テルミン、オンド・マルトノ、トラウトニウム、ハモンドなど、電子楽器黎明期の歴史は主に欧米を中心に語られてきた。
しかし同時期、日本でも独自の電子楽器研究や実験が行われていたことは、ほとんど知られていない。
本講演では、当時の新聞・特許・技術資料などをもとに、日本の知られざる電子楽器創成期を紹介する。1930年代のテルミン研究、電気三味線、YAMAHA Magna Organ、さらには1940年に発表された、エンベロープジェネレーターを備えた“シンセサイザーのような”電子アコーディオンなど、驚くべき事例を取り上げる。
世界的にもほとんど共有されてこなかった、日本電子楽器史の「失われた100年」を掘り起こす講演である。
In 1926, Toshiba unveiled a prototype electronic musical instrument at the Osaka Electrical Exhibition. The year 2026 marks exactly 100 years since that event.
The early history of electronic musical instruments—featuring inventions such as the Theremin, Ondes Martenot, Trautonium, and Hammond organ—has largely been told through a European and American perspective. Yet during the same period, Japan was also conducting its own original research and experimentation in electronic musical instruments, a history that remains almost entirely unknown.
Drawing from contemporary newspapers, patents, and technical documents, this lecture explores the hidden origins of electronic musical instruments in Japan. Topics include Theremin research in the 1930s, electric shamisen experiments, the Yamaha Magna Organ, and even a remarkably “synthesizer-like” electronic accordion presented in 1940 featuring an envelope generator.
This talk uncovers the “lost 100 years” of Japanese electronic musical instrument history—a story that has rarely been shared, even on the global stage.
